The fishing organization ARVI (Vigo Shipowners Cooperative)<\/strong> has warned that the fishing sector could face a shutdown if fuel prices continue to rise due to global geopolitical tensions. Conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran are pushing oil prices upward, which directly affects the cost of diesel used by fishing vessels.<\/p>\n

Fuel is one of the largest operational expenses for fishing fleets, particularly for distant-water and deep-sea fisheries. According to industry representatives, the sharp increase in fuel prices is significantly reducing the profitability of many fishing companies, which already operate with tight margins due to other costs such as vessel maintenance, crew salaries and regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n

ARVI warns that if fuel prices keep rising, some vessels may be forced to remain in port because fishing trips would no longer be economically viable. Such a situation could have serious economic consequences for the fishing industry and for coastal communities that depend on fishing activity.<\/p>\n

The sector is therefore calling on public authorities to implement support measures that could help mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs and prevent a potential crisis affecting both the fishing industry and seafood supply in the market.<\/p>\n
