New EU rules slow imports

COMPARTE CONTRA VIENTO Y MAREA y KILÓMETROS:

The Port of Vigo, the European Union’s leading gateway for seafood imports, is experiencing significant delays in the processing of imported fish products due to the implementation of new EU fisheries control regulations. Industry operators report that some shipments are facing waiting times of up to ten days before receiving the necessary validation to enter the market.

According to stakeholders, the main causes include insufficient human and technological resources, difficulties adapting to new digital certification systems, and inconsistencies in the interpretation of procedures by different inspection authorities. These challenges have created bottlenecks in the import process and increased operational costs for businesses.

The issue is particularly significant for Vigo, which handles a substantial share of Europe’s international seafood trade. Prolonged delays risk affecting supply chains, product availability, and the port’s competitive position within the European logistics network.

In response, representatives of the Port Authority have taken the matter to Brussels, seeking practical solutions that will streamline import procedures while maintaining the transparency and anti-illegal fishing objectives of the EU’s fisheries control framework.
